Langston Hughes Inspired
My favorite poet is Langston Hughes. He is a great source of inspiration to me and my writing. I am passionate about African American literature and culture, and I believe Hughes was exemplary of this genre. "Atlanta Nights" is my interpretation of "Harlem Night Song". "Mellow" comes from a poem of the same title. I focused on social media in today's society because it promotes an obsession with body image associated with social status. The last poem was inspired by the Hughes character, Jessie B. Simple.
Lost to the Drink
I cry an' I drown in Brandy 'til my eyes go blind
I get so drunk and so sick, wish I could lose my mind

No, ain't nothin' in this bottle can do a thang for me,
but it's a lil' liquor left, so I might as well take a drink.

Apple Tree (Mellow)

Into the laps of
celebrities, we fall
like apples from
a tree on the glossy
pages of a magazine
or the white glare of
computer screens.
Yet these images
we long to be:
stiff pose, body
draped in silk, bones
slicing through...
Atlanta Nights
It's Saturday night,
so my girlfriends
and I wander
through the city--
following the
flare of lights
flickering
along the sidewalk--
dancing and laughing.
Across the
dark sapphire
Atlanta skyline
the moon is full
and glowing.
